Your 3-Step Pinterest Marketing Strategy for 2024
If you’re thinking about using Pinterest in your marketing strategy this year, but you’re not sure how, I’m sharing 3 steps to help get you started!
I’ve been using Pinterest to promote my website design business since 2015/2016 and it’s been a huge driver of traffic to my website. However the platform has changed a lot since then, and the way we need to use it to market our businesses and get our content seen on Pinterest is different too.
So in this post I wanted to share the core 3 steps you need to take for getting started with Pinterest marketing this year!

Why use Pinterest in 2024?
While you may already be using other social media platforms for your marketing, such as Facebook or Instagram, you may have noticed that it’s really hard to get your audience OFF that platform and ON to your business website.
That’s because these platforms are designed to keep you scrolling, rather than letting you easily wander elsewhere on the internet…
For that reason, social media is a great place to be ‘social’ and connect with your audience on the platform, but it’s not great for generating traffic to your website.
Meanwhile, Pinterest is more of a ‘search engine’ than a social media platform. This is because people use it to search for inspiration or solutions, and are very used to clicking on the visual results (pins) and leaving the platform to find their solution on other websites. It’s like a stepping stone!
So Pinterest is great at generating traffic, and having more traffic & visitors on our websites means we have more opportunity for:
Brand awareness & visibility
Email list building and growth
Sales of products and/or contact enquiries!
Step One: Prepping for Pinterest
Before you get started marketing on Pinterest and creating Pins, you’ll want to get a few things prepared first:
A clear understanding of your target audience & who you’re creating content for
A brand style guide to help keep your pin designs and content consistent
A list of keywords & phrases relevant to your business and your target audience (I teach more about this in my Pinterest course!)
A website or place to send your Pinterest traffic that can help you achieve your goals
Once you’re prepped with these, you’ll also want to:
Understand how the Pinterest algorithm works
As with any social or search platform, Pinterest has an algorithm that decided what content to show to who and when. Getting to understand the algorithm means we as business owners can utilise this knowledge to create content that the Pinterest algorithm likes and will therefore prioritise and show to more of the RIGHT people!
Set up an Optimised Pinterest profile
Pinterest’s algorithm looks at your profile, Boards and Pins to get context about your business and understand where to rank your content and who to show it to.
Therefore you need to set up your profile in a way that gives as much context as possible about what you do! This is where knowing what keywords you want to focus on is helpful too.
Step Two: Content that Converts
Create great quality content to share to Pinterest
To get traffic from Pinterest onto your website, you’ll need some pages to share as Pins on Pinterest. This could be project pages, product pages, blog posts, just as an example. You want to make sure these pages are high quality and working towards achieving your business goals too!
Set up Boards that are optimised for Pinterest SEO
Your Boards are like ‘categories’ of content on your Pinterest profile, so you want to create categories that helps to tell Pinterest’s algorithm what you do and the type of content you plan to pin.
Create engaging, optimised Pins to share to Pinterest
Once you know what content you want to share to Pinterest, you’ll need to start designing some pins that make people want to click and go through to your website. These should also be optimised to give enough context to Pinterest’s algorithm!

Step Three: A Simplified Ongoing Strategy
Figure out your regular pinning schedule
What’s going to work best for you and your audience in terms of what to pin, at what times and how often? Keep in mind when your audience are online and what’s doable for you and the content you have.
Use extra tools to streamline, automate & speed up your Pinterest process
You can use scheduling software and other time-saving tools to help speed up and streamline your Pinterest strategy. Automating as much as possible is great for us busy business owners!
Understand analytics & refine your Pinning process
In order to get BETTER at pinning it’s important to regularly check in on your analytics and use this information to alter and refine your ongoing Pinterest strategy.
